Glossary

Growth systems, in plain English.

Short definitions of the terms behind getting found, booking customers and following up — from AEO to zero-click search.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

The work of getting a business named and accurately described inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews.

AI SEO (AEO)
AI Overviews

AI-generated summaries Google shows at the top of some search results, drawing on and linking to web pages.

AI receptionist

Software that answers business calls and messages in natural conversation — answering questions, collecting details, booking appointments and handing off to a person when needed.

Citation (local SEO)

Any online mention of a business’s name, address and phone number, such as a directory listing. Consistent citations help search engines trust the business’s details.

Cold outreach

Contacting prospects who haven’t reached out to you — by email, direct message or phone — with a relevant, personalized message.

Cold email & DM outreach
Conversion tracking

Measuring which ads, pages or campaigns lead to a valuable action, such as a call, form submission or booked appointment.

CRM (customer relationship management)

Software that stores every lead and customer, their conversations and where they are in the sales process.

Entity consistency

Keeping a business’s key facts — name, services, contact details and location — identical everywhere they appear online, so search engines and AI tools can trust them.

FAQ schema

Structured data that marks up questions and answers on a page so machines can read them reliably.

Funnel

The connected path a prospect takes from first contact to booked appointment or purchase, with each step designed to lead to the next.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Another name for optimizing to appear in answers from generative AI tools; used almost interchangeably with AEO.

Google Business Profile

A business’s free listing on Google Search and Maps, showing its details, services, photos and reviews. It’s central to local rankings.

SEO & Google Business Profile
Lead nurturing

Staying in touch with leads who aren’t ready to buy yet through planned, helpful messages until they are.

Local SEO

Optimizing a business to rank in local search results and the map pack for customers in its area.

SEO & Google Business Profile
Map pack

The group of local businesses Google shows with a map for searches with local intent, such as “plumber near me”.

Map pack checklist
Missed-call text-back

An automatic text sent to anyone whose call wasn’t answered, so the conversation continues instead of ending.

NAP

Name, Address, Phone — the core business details that should match exactly across every listing.

Referral system

A simple, trackable way for happy customers to introduce friends and colleagues, often with an automatic thank-you.

Reviews & referrals
Review gating

Only asking customers you expect to be happy for public reviews. Google’s policies prohibit it.

Schema markup (structured data)

Code added to a web page that labels its facts — organization, services, reviews, FAQs — in a standard format search engines and AI systems read.

Speed to lead

The time between a lead reaching out and a business responding. Faster responses win more jobs.

Zero-click search

A search where the person gets their answer on the results page or in an AI answer without clicking through to a website.
